time my horse was pretty well exhausted, and
his rider was not very fresh; but with the prospect
of a good meal and a comfortable bed at Serai-Keui,
we struggled on. There I paid off my men, and
took the early train next morning for Smyrna,
having done a hard sixteen days' work, and sus-
tained some great disappointments, but consoled
for all by the Jewish inscription.
