Similar regulations., putting the charge of Jewish tombs in the hands
o£ the Jewish community (in accordance with an arrangement which
must have been made with the city), seem to have been common else-

3. Lampe and Siblia.

In 1. 2 I read KAHZAINT OC, making the note that A before IN was
falsely cut and then partially erased by the engraver. Hogarth read
KArCAIN OC. The text in BCH is KAHIA1 OC. This shows that
M. Cumont's transcription eirUk^v) 'Ho-ouos, founded on BCH, is impos-
sible. T[e]os for Talos was probably the name; [Ilflos is possible; but
there is hardly room for T[ai]os. e-nWh-qaiv2 is here used instead of
eiriKk-nv : the latter is the commoner epigraphic form, while e-niKhqa-is
is the word in literature. Eustathius (as quoted in Steph. s. v.) says that
eitUkriv is contracted from e-nUkr]aiv p. 1053 or from eTW<krjbr]v p. 1255,
but it is generally said to be accus. of eirUkr], which is used in an epigr.
CIG 6012 b, Anth. Gr. App. 239 1. 6. enitCkriv occurs in Dio Cass. J5,16,
Suidas s.v. 'Eppoyevris, Plato Chit. 58 D, 66 B, 114 B, &c, but in epigraphy
it is almost solely Chr. (except in poetry CIG 6012 b).

I know no reason why Christians should have taken up the expression
eiTLKXrjv, but the evidence is clear that they favoured it. Such fashions
are known. E.g. Bonae Memoriae is exclusively Chr.; Aeternae Memoriae
is pagan, except in a few early Chr. inscr. [du IVmt siecle, cest a dire un
temps ou laformule epigrapliique Chretieane participait encore du stylpaien
Le Blant II p. 338).
