The side-boards (a) varied in length with the length of the bed, that is, from 157-190+ cm. The
width varied from 9-14 cm., but the most usual width was about 12 cm. The thickness in the middle

was usually about 2.5-3 cm. on the outside and 2-2.5 cm. on the inside; for the inner edge was under-
cut to the thickness of the end-boards. The ends where the legs were set on were slightly thicker
than the middle (see Figs. 191, 194-198). The grain of the wood runs the length of the board.
