These two ostrich-shaped pots are unique. Being associated with a toy dagger and the
statuette of Menthuhotep, they may be fancy pots or toy pots made for a child. (Pl. 71,1.)

The two forms are related closely to the Nubian forms Bkt. CXXI and Bkt. J CXXI,
but the incised decoration is not identical with any of the Nubian patterns. The graves in
which the two examples occur are both of the same general date as the others in the tumuli
K III and K IV.
2. BLACK-POLISHED WARE
Black-polished vessels occur in a few isolated examples in practically all ancient periods
in Egypt. The ware usually shows a dark grey break, seldom quite black, and the common-
