GRAVES SUBSIDIARY TO THE ROYAL TOMBS OF DYNASTY I AT ABYDOS

99

Thus, counting the 13 square N-S graves as N-S, we have 54 N-S graves in the complex, and it is
obvious that the N-S direction is the dominant feature of the orientation. Of these 54 N-S graves,
the situation brings 10 in group a and 24 in group c (total 34) at right angles to the main tomb, while
the 6 large N-S graves in b and the 14 small N-S graves in d are parallel to the main tomb. There
remain the 12 E-W graves. Ten of these are medium-sized graves in group b, and 2 are small graves
in d. These 12 are at right angles to the main tomb.

k. The Subsidiary Graves of Qay-'a
The tomb of Qay-'a presents a distinct advance on the tomb of Semerkhet. The main tomb
consists not of one great wooden-lined chamber, but of such a chamber with additions—2 rooms on
each side of the stairway, a long empty compartment on the east, south, and west of the main chamber,
and two other empty compartments north of the four extra rooms. To this nucleus a long trench was
added on the east, divided by cross walls into four unequal spaces of which three had been used as
magazines for offerings. I include this trench in the nucleus structure, and thus the subsidiary graves
are reduced to a single row on the east, south, and west, which as in the Semerkhet tomb were close
against the nucleus part of the substructure (see Map i).
Group a: on the south; 7 graves numbered from the east.
Group b: on the east; 10 graves numbered from the south.
Group c: wanting (?).
Group d: on the west; 10 graves numbered from the south.
