JAN NEPOMUCEN GŁOWACKI

to copying, and he worked independently in the plein-air. In the years 1825-1827
he was a holder of the Jagellonian University scholarship in the Vienna Academy.
These studies were to complement the course at the Cracow School of Arts and
prepare the painter for his pedagogical work in the Cracow Schools. In Vienna Gło-
wacki was taught by the well-known landscape painters F. Steinfeld and F. Gauer-
mann. His interests other than landscape are illustrated by the contacts he came into
with E. Peter, M. Daffinger and F. Amerling. His stay in Vienna allowed Głowacki
to achieve artistic maturity, among others by means of plein-air work. After
his return to Cracow he taught drawing in the St Annę Secondary School and in
the School of Arts. In a short time he gained the reputation of a conscientious tea-
cher as.well as a well known landscape painter and a successful portrait-painter.
The crowning achievement of Głowacki’s career was the establishing of the Land-
scape Department at the School of Arts in 1842 for him.
