Valuable buttons from the chapel of St. Mary Magdalenę
in Karniowice
In the course of the conservation works conducted in the chapel of St. Mary Magdalenę
in Karniowice - a village situated in the south of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland,
researchers came across the remains of a damaged coffin. The valuable (atypical) but-
tons from the dead persons attire, described in the present article and discovered dur-
ing the archeological excavations in the chapels crypt, were subseąuently subjected
to a series of specialist examinations in the Laboratory of Analysis and Nondestruc-
tive Investigation of Heritage Objects (LANBOZ, National Museum in Kraków). The
army frock coat dating back to the period of the Republic of Kraków - currently in the
collection of the National Museum in Kraków - helped the scientists to reconstruct
the outfit of the deceased State official. (Transl. Piotr Mizia)
