Summary
„Rare Value". About At the Pasture of Maksymilian Gierymski
and the debut of the artist at the Kunstlerhaus in Vienna
This essay considers the connection between Maksymilian Gierymski (1846-1874) and
the Kunstlerhaus circle in Vienna, which had a positive impact on the development of
the artists career. I was interested especially in the years 1870 to 1871. The decision of
sending his works to Austro-Hungarian Monarchy turned out to be an important career
move for two particular reasons, artistic and commercial: the first of his pictures, which
was on display there, was bought for the Austrian imperial collection. That purchase initi-
ated the interest of Viennese art dealers in Gierymski' s work and generated morę sales
opportunities to the countries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Among Gierymskis work
exhibited at this time in Vienna was the painting At the Pasture, found recently at auction in
Stockholm. This picture was one of the first works presented by the artist in Vienna' s Kun-
stlerhaus in 1870, and then purchased by a local art-dealer company Miethke & Wawra.
At the Pasture is an excellent example of the artists work of that time. It is characterised
by a unique approach to a popular subject, subtle mood and a sophisticated way of using
simple artistic methods. It was considered to be lost, like many other works of Gierym-
ski, so its discovery should be seen as a major breakthrough in completing knowledge
about the whole oeuvre of the prematurely deceased artist. The principle inspiration for
this article was the effort to reconstruct the circumstances and origins of this work, its
later provenance and further discussion on the subject of the picture, along with its inter-
pretation. We can hope that the coming years will bring us further discoveries of missing
Gierymski works, allowing us to enjoy their beauty and unique gentle mood.
