Ferguson 1, 71. Caillot 716. Gardner, Bibi. Rosicruc., no. 51: „The reason I have
inserted this work in the present catalogue is on account of the char-
mingly engraved Hermetic plates on Alchemy (19 in all representing 78 emblems)
in the 3rd part; these are of such a high order of merit that I cannot pass this
work over without mention.” Duveen, p. 43 : „An interesting work .... cont. 19
most curions plates representing alchemical operations and five plates repres.
purely Chemical apparatus and operations.” Bibliotheca Esoterica, no. 207 : „Un
des ouvrages les plus rares sur la transmutation des métaux.” Barchusen
(1666—1723) taught chemistry and medicine at Utrecht and this work is dedi-
cated to the authorities of this town and the only folded plate shows: Facies
inferior officinae Chemicae Ultrajectinae. Some underlinings and corrections in
red pencil, otherwise an excellent copy in an interesting binding of a rare book.
18. Barlandus, H. Hollandiae comitum historia et icônes : cum selec-
tis scholiis ad Lectoris lucem. Ejusd. Barlandi Caroli Burgundiae
Ducis vita. Item; Ultraiectensium episcoporum Catalogus et res
gestae. Ejusd. argumenti libellus Gerardo Noviomago auctore. Fran-
cofurti, ap. J. Wechelum, imp. Sig. Feyerabend, 1585. With 36
beautiful portr. and arms, woodcuts by Jost Amman. 8 Ivs., 393,
109 pp. Boards. f 48.—
Andresen, Der deutsche Peintre-Graveur, I. SS. 334135. Becker, Jobst Amman,
SS. 132. Very scarce! The woodcuts, portraits of Dutch counts have no sign.
Underneath are the arms with little Ornaments on each side. 4 leaves are mended
in the margins, and little waterstained. The pages 273—291 are stained in the
upper margins. Otherwise a fine copy.
19. [ST. BARTHOLOMEWS EVE] (Barnaud, Nicolas?). Dialogue
auquel sont traitées plusieurs choses advenues aux Luthériens &
Huguenots de la France... Imprimé à Basle, le douzième jour du
sixième mois, d’après la journée de la Trahison, 1573. 2 Ivs., 164 pp.
Full polished calf, back richly gilt and with label, gilt border and
gilt edges. f 270.—
Barbier I, 940. Brunet IV, 599. (gives Philadelphe as author). Haag, France
First, very scare
édition, (Brunet wrongly says that the latin édition is the first) of an extremely
important work. The question of the authorship is not yet absolutély cleàr.
The bibliographers mention Beza, Barnaud, Hugues Donneau etc. but in ail
probability Barnaud is the author. (For further information cf. Haag). A worm-
hole in the first 5 Ivs. very neatly repaired, otherwise a very fine copy in an
attractive binding.
Présentation copy from the Editor.
20. (Baumgarten) Donaverius, (= Donauer) Christ. Martini à
Baumgarten in Breitenbach; Peregrinatio in Aegyptum, Arabiam,
Palaestinam et Syriam. Edit, studio et opéra M. Christ. Donaveri.
