Jean Grolier’s copy.
105. GROLIER-BINDING. Osorio, Hieronimus. De Gloria libri V.
Ad loannem Tertium Lusitaniae Regem. Florence, Laurentius Tor-
rentinus, 1552. With woodcut-arms on title and a few woodcut initi-
ais. 295 pp. La-8vo. (14,5 : 22,5 cm.) Bound for Jean Grolier in a
splendid „mosaiqué” binding of light brown polished calf, richly
decorated on both covers with a finely designed scrollpattern of
interlacing fillets, outlined in gilt tooling and enamelled with black,
blue and white. At the foot of the front-cover: ,,Jo. Grolieri et amico-
rum” and in the centre of the back-cover the device : ,,Portio mea
Domine sit in terra viventium”. Back with raised bands, gilt edges.
f 4000.—
The Barbet copy. In the „Bulletin Morg and” tome VII no. 28298 there is repro-
duced a binding of the same style also for a book by Osorius and printed. at
Florence 1552. The Bulletin says: „Les volumes reliés en mosaiqué portant le
nom de Grolier sont d’une excessive rareté.” The binding is well preserved, but
the back is very neatly renewed and the plates somewhat restored and with
a few small round wormholes. The book itself is also of great interest. Osorio
of Portuguese origin and called the „Portuguese Cicero” gives in this work his
important philosophical, historical and sociological view. The text is in fine
condition.
See reproduction on Frontispiece.
106. Gual a Longa Platea, Arnold. De sartis tectis SS. ecclesiae
resarciendis, liber unus, continens articulos amplius quadringentos,
in futuro propediem generali côcilio tractandos. Excud. Wilh. Fabri-
cius à Valleducis 1540. With 2 large fine woodcuts, one large and
some smaller remarkable ivoodcut-initials. 4 Ivs., 159 pp. Old, not
contemp. polished calf with label. f 120.—
A very rare impression. Deschamps col. 432 knows no impression of Vadutz
(Dulcis Vallis), capital of Liechtenstein. The contents of this book are very
interesting as well. It is of anti-reformation tendency and contains more than
400 articles, mostly of juridical inter est. •
(For example: D'e iure gentium non violando, de testamentis, de advocatis, de
iudice corrupto, ad legem Carolam de notariis, de his quibus mandata est iuris
dictio a.s.o., a.s.o.) —- The remarkable woodcuts show: Archangel Michael with
the sword, holding a balance on which a good man and a devil. The other one:
S. Jerome on his knees, holding a stone in the right hand, in the background a
chapel, the lion and the crucifix. — A very good. large copy with bookplate of
Henry Francis Lyte.
107. Gudiel, Geronymo. Compendio de Algunas Historias de Espana,
donde se tratan muchas anriguedades dignas de memoria : y especial-
mente se da noticia de la antigua familia de los Girones y de otros
muchos linajes. Alcala, Juan Iniguez de Lequerica, 1577. With large
■woodcut on title made by Antonio de Arfe, very nice and interesting
initiais and 36 full-page woodcuts of pedigrees (5 of them folded).
