A SILVER MEDALLION FROM SYRIA
Summary
In the collections of the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow is a smali silver hoard
found in Syria in 1865. The hoard consists of three medallions (ćyPAyjfj.a ), a figurę
of Gaius Caesar and a vessel handle, shaped like a dolphin.
The article deals with one of the medallions which represents Heracles and
a Bacchante. Scenes of this kind are found in ancient art coming from the period
sińce 4th century B. C. The bronze mirror with a picture of Heracles and Auge
(from Helena Stathatos’ collection), probably a work of Lysippus, comes from just
that period. In subject matter the group of Heracles and a Bacchante on a scyphoid
crater dated for the third ąuarter of the 4th century B. C. is closest to the scene
represented in the medallion. It has been dated as coming from the same period by
J. de Witte (Monuments d’argent trouves en Syrie G. A. VI. 1880), who ascribes its
authorship to Lysippus. Stylistic analysis, however, shows that the medallion might
have been manufactured in the Syrian centre in the lst century B. C. * 17
