No attemp was macic to rcconstruct thc forest covcr in thc surounding tcrrain.
The archaeological layers differed in their plant content. On this basis 6 phases oflocal human
activit) were described.
lst phase — layer Ylj (and perhaps IX-X cent. or slightly earlicr — cultivation of ryc and
whr.it ncar thc region X was possible
2nd phase — layer VIg, IX—X cent. — cereals with field weeds were stored on the place, mcadow
plants were brought with hay or by domestic animals
3rd phase — layers VIf, IX—X and VIc4, X—XI cent. — rich ruderal plant communitics dcvclopcd
after thc abandonment of thc region by people
4th phase — layers Yle and bottom part of VIc-d, XI—XII cent. — number of ruderal plants
decreased duc to cleaning up of the region, cereals were brought again with weeds and mcadow
plants with hay or by animals grazing in thc valley
5th phase - npper part of layer VIc-d, XII cent. — the tcrrain was abandoned which cnabled thc
devclopment of ruderal communitics, Rubus idaeus and Sambucus nigra were common.
6th phase — layer Vb, XV cent. — intensive husbandry, storage of cereal and hay.
The decrease of Sqlix curve in thc pollen diagram and of Salicion species in macrofossil diagram,
which can be scen in layers VIf and VIe4, was explained as a result of the fali of water levcl in thc
river vallcys betwcen thc IX—X and X—XI cent., followcd by an inerease in thc XI—XII cent.
(Figs 3 and 4).
