ris. a serenissimo Emanuele / portugalie rege — missa etc. On title a woodcut
with a large coat of arms of Portugal, at both sides a male and female native

Proctor, 11048. Kat. Huth, III, Nr. 3208. Apparently the first work mentioning the
isle of Ceylon (under the name of „Taprobana“, page 8). This rarest work contains an
account of the first Settlement by Europeans in India, and is thought to be
the earliest book about this theme at all. This very interesting work contains a comprehension
of all victories the Portuguese gained at Mombas, Cannanore, Cochin etc. in the year 1505 under
the Portuguese Viceroy Francis d’Almeida, Count of Abrantes. Besides there are mentioned the
beautiful buildings of different Oriental towns, their trade with pepper and jewels and other
interesting things. Francis d’Almeida intended to conquer the Malabar Coast, but having a
quarell with Albuquerque, he could not execute his projects. In a quarrel with the Kaffirs he
was killed by an arrow, near the Cape of Good Hope (on his return journey in 1509). — While
his government the Portuguese discovered Ceylon, the Maldive Islands and Madagascar.
There exists another edition of this book, published at Cologne in the same year which is not
known to be older than our copy, so the Nuremberg edition is perhaps the
first book on Europeans’ Settlement in India.
