Pierre Choumoff - Polish-Russian photographer of Parisian Bohemia
Piotr Szumow/Pierre Choumoff. Un photographe russe d Paris and one of the greatest portrait photogra-
phers of Parisian Bohemia in 1915-1930. He is Jewish, born in Grodno in 1872 as Piotr Szumów. Polish
by choice, he is active fighter for national independence. From 1906 he lives in Paris, where his Polish
friend Jan Stróżecki, a former creator of Polish Social Party, teaches him photography. From 1911, already
as Pierre Choumoff, he lead independent photographic atelier. He wins many prizes on exhibitions and
Salons. He is a personality of Polish and Russian emigrants, a friend of painters, musicians and politics.
His portraits of writers (Paul Valery, Harry Kessler, Vladimir Mayakovsky) and artists (Monet, Leger,
Duncan, Foujita), or photographs of Diaghilev’s ballets are easily recognizable by the unique style and
the mastery in iight and shadow operating. He is author of photographs of sculpture and face of Augustę
Rodin. But also a creator of his own photographic theory and aesthetic. The last year of his life he spend
in Łódź (Poland), as collaborator of Ludwik Geyers Cotton Industry. He continues to expose his work
on local photographic exhibitions.
Despite the great success and important well-preserved legacy, he had been forgotten and is now dif-
ficult to catch and analyse. This article is a step to restore him his identity and a place in Polish and Rus-
sian art history.
