cavalier, with his back to the spectator, exercising a horse round
a post; and nearer the front, towards the right, are a gentle-
man standing leaning on a stick, and a page behind him holding
his horse. Engraved by Laurent, in the Musee Francais.
Taken from the Louvre in 1815, and restored to the Hague
Gallery.

423. A Halt of Huntsmen on the summit of a hill, forming
the fore-ground of a Landscape, at the side of which are two
large trees, and in the distance some buildings: the party con-
sists of two sportsmen, with horses, one of whom has dis-
mounted to let his steed feed; a gentleman on foot, with a
long staff and six dogs, one of which a negro is caressing.
Engraved in the Musee Napoleon.
Valued by the Experts du Musee . 1816. . 2600 fs. 104Z.
Now in the Louvre.

424. A View on the Sea-shore, with a square tower on a hill
in the middle distance: amongst the figures that enliven the
scene are a man standing with his back to the spectator, and a
woman (seated) with a child in her lap, apparently looking at
some fish on the ground, two horses (one of which is laden with
nets), and two little boys on the ground playing ; the opposite
side presents a view of the sea, with vessels and figures. En-
graved by Niquet, in the Musee Napoleon.
Claimed from the Louvre, by the Allies, in 1815.
The author of the Musee Napoleon, published in 1809, in refer-
ence to the above picture, observes, “ that it was one of twenty-four
of the productions of this estimable master acquired by the French
arms in 1806.” Sic gloria mundi.
