27. Peasants with Mules. A landscape, exhibiting a hilly
site, traversed by a river, the greater part of which is concealed
by bushy trees skirting its banks, beyond which are seen a castle
and other buildings on the summit of a hill. Upon a broken
and undulating fore-ground are two peasants with mules; one
of them, wearing a red jacket, leads his beast, upon the pan-
niers of which is seated a woman; a second mule, laden with a
package of clothes and a milk can, follows; and in the rear of
these is the other man beating his stubborn animal, which is
laden with casks. The brilliant warmth of the sun has not
yet dispersed the dewy moisture, which still floats over the
surface of the water, and gives to distant objects a diaphanous
effect. This is a gem of great beauty. Engraved in the
Le Brun Gallery.
