268. Portrait of a Gentleman about thirty-five years of age,
represented in nearly a front view, with dark bushy hair,
parted in front: he is dressed in black silk velvet, relieved
with a plain white pendant collar; he holds a locket in his
right hand, and only part of the left is visible. The back-
ground is composed of a portion of a Gothic building. This
excellent picture is painted with the breadth and brilliancy of
Rembrandt, to whom it is not unfrequently attributed.

ground of which is overgrown with docks and other wild
herbage; the whole of which appear to be studies from
nature, and form the chief interest in the picture. A herdsman
and cattle are seen in the distance. A fine evening effect.

270. Two Travellers Plaiting at an Inn. Only a small
angle of which is seen with an archway on the right: one
of them standing on the farther side of a white spotted horse,
is looking towards his companion, who is mounted on a bright
bay horse, seen in a front view; they are followed by a black
and white dog, beyond which the eye looks over a bald
hilly country.
