studies in indian ink, made on the spot, and the boat in which
the Artist sailed with the sseets is also introduced. Many
memorandums, in his own hand writing, give additional
interest to these drawings. A tenth drawing, of superior
merit, is in the same folio, representing the Departure of
Prince William III. The composition consists of several
state yachts, ships of war, and small craft, and the aspect is
that of a calm (size 11 in. by 1 ft. Q^in.)
His finest works are, however, by no means confined to the
continent, for there are few amateurs in this country who do
not possess two or more examples. The Messrs. Woodburn,
who, in addition to their already well-stored folios, have
recently added the very rich collection of ancient drawings
belonging to the late Sir Thomas Lawrence, at a cost of
16,000/., possess many beautiful specimens by William Vander
Velde.
