The preceding three pictures are finished in the most delicate
manner. They now adorn the Palace of the Hermitage, St. Peters-
burg.
26. The Dentist. The subject is composed of three figures
apparently viewed from the exterior of a window. An old
man is here seen seated, leaning back in his chair, while the
operator, who stands on his farther side with one hand on
the patient's head, examines his mouth by the light of a
candle. A pretty young woman (doubtless intended for the
old man's daughter) stands by, holding his hand. A lantern
with a light in it, a basin, and a basket, are on a ledge in
front. An exquisitely finished picture.

represented in a profile view ; his dress is composed of a cap
decked with feathers, and a steel cuirass over a morone-colour
velvet jacket.
