223. An Army defiling through a hilly country. The com-
position offers on the left of the foreground, a cart drawn by
two horses, on one of which the driver is seated sideways, and
a woman sits on the baggage ; an officer on horseback, accom-
panied by a soldier on foot, are at the side of the cart, and a
beggar with a wooden leg is at the head of the horses. Near
the side are several cavalry, forming the van of the army,
which extends to the opposite side of the view, where it is
seen traversing a river, and another portion of it is at the
same time winding round the hill in the distance. See des-

224. A View on the Sea-coast. This delightful little
study from nature is composed, on the left, of a sandy hill,
with a building on its summit, only a part of which is seen;
a winding road round the base of the hill leads to the sea-
beach. A man with a pack at his back, followed by a dog,
is on the road, and two other persons are seen in the dis
tance. Painted in a clear and silvery tone of colouring.
