167. The Marriage of St. Catharine. This composition
represents the Virgin, clothed in a scarlet vest, seated at the
base of a column in a profile view, with the infant standing
naked on her hand, and bending forward to put a ring on the
finger of St. Catharine ; who is attired in a pink vest and a
white satin robe, and receives the mystic honour kneeling.
St. John stands with his back to the spectator before them,
and St. Joseph and St. Francis are on the farther side of the
group. This is a joint production of the master and scholars.
Description No. 363. Vol. IL, improved.
6 st. 6 by 7 st. 10.—C.
In the Museum at Berlin.
168. Romulus and Remus. A female, attired in a crimson
vest, is seated in the centre holding the infants Remus and
Romulus, in her arms, one of whom is extending its hand to
take some fruit from a man on the left, and the other is
bending down to caress its foster-parent, a wolf, near which
stand two shepherds viewing with surprise the discovery.
The figure of a river deity is introduced in the foreground.
Injudicious cleaning has nearly destroyed this once brilliant
and beautiful picture. See No. 367, Vol. II.
