pictures were purchased at Messina, about the year 1798, and sold
to John Purlin, Esq., at the sale of whose Collection, in 1801, this
was sold for 190 gs.
Again, in the Collection of T. Ford, Esq., 1839. 228 gs.
Bought by Messrs. Smith.

5. A Shepherd and Shepherdess playing on pipes. See
description, No. 403, Vol. vm.
Put up to auction in the Collection of Ralph Fletcher, Esq., 1838,
and bought in at 1350 gs.

6. Two Men in conversation. The view, on the right,
presents clusters of trees extending across one-half of the
scene ; on the verge of these is a youth seated on a rising
ground, with a staff in his hand, and his attention directed to
a man standing on his right, who points with his hand down-
wards. On the opposite side is a herd of goats browsing-
near a river ; beyond which the eye looks over an open coun-
try, in which may be perceived the remains of ancient build-
ings. The effect is that of the decline of a fine day in
autumn.

vm., and read at the end of the same, “ morning,” for
evening.
