unable to reconcile this width with the supposed destination of the stalls,
chose rather to increase their proportions than to abandon his hypothesis;
but t do maintain, that when f. find him at variance with M. .Fauvel, the

very person from whom he obtained Ins information, T am at least bound to
prefer the statement of the latter. If, then, these slalls scarcely exceeded
5 or 6 feet in width, they could not contain the chariots that ran in the
Olympic Gaines ; and still less so, if, as in the only case in which we find
an opening;, it did not occupy the whole front of the stall, as occurred in
those of the real Aphesis, hut only part of it, so as lo diminish the space
through which the chariots had to pass; the hypothesis of the Count
appears, therefore, to me, as irreconcilable even lo the character of the
existing building, as T have before shown it lo be to that described by
Pausanias.



The engraving of the plates has occupied so much time, that the
publication of this work has been considerably delayed, in consequence of
which M. Pouejiicville iias in some degree preceded me. He has entered
at some length into a description of the Plain of Olympia: having
completed my work for the press, I feci but little inclined to remodel it
in consequence of his observations, nor do 1 think myself called upon in
enter the lists against all those who may differ from me as to the supposed
position ofl.be Hippodrome; to overlook, however, M. Pouqueville's
observations altogether, might appear to be treating him loo slightingly, or
lead to an inference that I did not dare to contest his opinions; I will
