the monks and praying pilgrims. On coming out*
I told him that the Christians were much more lib-
eral than the Mussulmans; for we had permitted
him to see all the holy places in the church, while
I had been violently driven from the door of the
mosque in Hebron. He railed at the ignorance
and prejudices of his countrymen, and swore, if I
would go back to Hebron, he would carry me
through the mosque on the point of his sword. I
did not much relish this method of entering a
mosque, but took it, as it was meant, for a warm
expression of his willingness to serve me ; and we
returned to the apartment of the superior to bid
him farewell. The superior accompanied us to
the door of the convent; and, without meaning to
be scandalous, or insinuate that there was any thing
wrong in it, although he was a young and hand-
some man, I left him talking with a woman..
