it was the oldest kiln in this area. It is certain that the kilns were already disused
when the construction of the Great Gate wall and of the portico wall took place.
If we assume that they worked till then, the period of their use would last two hun-
dred years. Even if there existed more than these four kilns then, (the fifth was found
to the E from the discussed group but was not excavated, all that can be said is
that its plan is analogous to that of kiln 3), this period still seems too long.

Lamps can be very helpful in dating the kilns in the discussed area. Near the
kilns there were no lamps dated for the period after the year 273 A.D.46. In this
way the time of existence of the kilns must be narrowed to 173 years. Though this
period seems to be too long as well, a more precise dating is not possible because of
the lack of data.
