FOREWORD

Studia palmyreńskie fłrst appeared in 1966 as a direct result of the excavations conducted in
Palmyra from 1959 on by late Professor Kazimierz Michalowski. As several members of his seminar
at the University of Warsaw became interested, and in due time acquainted, with this magnificent site,
Michalowski decided to publish a collection of papers on Palmyra by his students, mostly versions of
their M.A. memoirs. It has proven practicable and useful to continue this undertaking in the following
years.

The new periodical won sufficient circulation in the academic world to justify its publishing in
languages more widely read than our own. However, the increasing inefficiency of the publishing
industry in this country made its appearance more and more erratic. Volume VIII remained nearly ten
years in print until it finally appeared in 1985 ! Under these circumstances, no authors could be found,
and indeed no point could be seen to continue the publication.

These problems are happily over. This volume shall appear within weeks after the final editing
of the papers. The financing was provided by the Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), as part of
a wider program connected with the excavations in Palmyra. It is a plaesant opportunity for the present
writer to thank this organisation for its continuing and resolute support of Polish archaeological activities
in the Near East.

It was felt that these new Studia palmyreńskie should be more closely lin’ced with the actual
excavations in Palmyra and serve as a ready means to reflect our current field work tiære. The papers
included in this volume present exclusively new material from excavations and surveys, some by young
scholars who have recently joined the mission. But I have also the great pleasure to welcome on these
pages a long-time friend and collaborator, Khaled As‘ad, Director of Antiquities and Museums of
Palmyra.
