ZYGMUNT HENDEL’S STUDIES OF THE WAWEL CASTLE
S u m m a r y

Zygmunt Hendel continued the study of the Wawel’s architecture
begun in the last decades of the 19th century by the architects Tomasz
Pryliński (early 1880s; castle) and Sławomir Odrzywolski (1886-
1888; cathedral). Hendel, who headed the restoration of the Wawel
Castle from 1905 to 1916, employed research methods similar to his
predecessors based on the analysis of the brickwork revealed when
the stucco was removed from the walls. He compared the uncovered
structures and details with archival descriptions of the castle.
Exploration of the surrounding area yielded hundreds of architectural
details and archaeological artifacts from different periods. The goal
of his study was to establish the stratigraphic chronology of the
building by revealing the historie fabric of the walls and details
beneath changes and additions madę in the 19th century. Although
the planned publication of the his findings never came to fruition,
the working notes and descriptions of the architectural study have
been preserved. These include texts and drawings of architectural

details, with their locations marked, as well as photographs. In the
description and analysis of the brickwork the walls were divided into
Polish, that is built up to the 18th century, and Austrian - secondary,
added in the 19th century. Medieval walls were considered separately
and studied very scrupulously.
Architectural research conducted on Wawel Hill was one of the
analytical methods used to identify and classify the materiał fabric of
the buildings and to define the next steps in the restoration plan. The
findings of the studies not only had great scholarly significance, but
also practical application to the restoration of the castle. The research
revealed the appearance of the castle in its golden age and gave the
restorers a basis for the restoration plan and for the reconstruction
of a number of architectural elements and details. The historical and
architectural research combined with archaeological discoveries, madę
it possible to reconstruct various elements. The findings were directly
applicable to the designs and plans for the restoration of the castle.
