of the value of the setting
as well as of the gems.
To use a French term, for
which there is no English
equivalent, it is bijouterie
as against the joiallerie of
commerce, which latter
has no object but to dis-
play the qualities of the
actual stones, the sole duty
of the setting being to hold
them securely and to efface
itself as much as possible.
In this jewellery of Mr.

selves are of no great
costliness, but so skilfully
are they wrought into the
general design that they
