LONDON—Mr. William Rothenstein,
Professor of Civic Art in the Uni-
versity of Sheffield, has been appointed
Principal and Headmaster of the Royal
College of Art at South Kensington, in
succession to Mr. Augustus Spencer,
who retires after holding the position for
twenty years, and it is announced that
he will enter on his duties at the beginning
of the new term next month. The
appointment is of no little significance
in view of the criticisms that have during
the past few years been directed against
the policy of the College. Under Mr.
Spencer, a native of Yorkshire like his
successor, much good work has certainly
been done in the various departments—
