rated pottery and glassware, inlaid distaffs
and market-baskets, quaint paintings upon
glass and wood-engravings, book-bindings
of repousse brass studded with semi-
precious stones, carved and coloured toys,
and a host of other things bearing the
unmistakable stamp of art. a a a
To enable connoisseurs and the public to
appreciate this vast treasure house of
popular art, the C^echo-Slovakian authori-
ties recently organised an important exhibi-
tion in the Pavilion de Marsan. Something
more was done than to present a mere
collection of heterogeneous objects con-
nected with art and folklore. There was a
faithful representation of the exterior of a
Czecho-Slovakian house, with its thatched
roof and painted entrance, leading to one of
those elaborately ornamented kitchens with
curious altar-like fireplace which every
country woman skilfully redecorates every

six months or so with a design of foliage
and arabesques in red. Equally realistic
were two interiors, admirably arranged
with antique Czecho-Slovakian furniture
and hangings, on some of which were
noticeable those symbols of fecundity—a
dove and a cock—which are continually
introduced into design by the decorative
artists of the country. Finally, an impor-
tant section was devoted to fete day
costumes, displayed upon lay figures. a
The only part of Bohemia which still
retains the national costume is the region
of Domazlice, the centre of the country of
the Chodes, that privileged tribe whom the
Czech kings appointed to guard the exten-
sive virgin forests along the Bavarian
frontier. There is a severity about the
dress of the typical Chode (who, when in
the forest, carries an ornamented staff
which is at once a walking-stick and battle-
