"siesta." by alessandro pomi

(Venice Biennial Exhibition, 1924)

VENICE.—While deferring to a later
date my complete notice of the Four-
teenth Venice International Art Exhibition
I am writing to-day of certain painters of
special interest who are showing there this
year. Alessandro Pomi has followed up his
success of the last Biennial (1922), in Vespro
Intimo, with a group of eleven paintings
on this occasion, of which I am able to
produce here an illustration of one of the
best. Siesta, like the Vespro, is a family
group, and takes its title evidently from the
child who is seated asleep in the foreground;
this figure is a good example of the artist's
clean, rather hard but admirably correct
drawing; note especially the drawing of the
knees, which could not be better, and the
whole drowsy abandon of the pose. Just
as good in its own way is The Experiment,
where, as always, this artist is perfectly
true to type in the professor and his
students. Where Pomi fails is as a colourist;
in Al Sole (In the Sun) he seems to make
an effort to get at a less cold scheme
of colour, but if so the effort is not crowned

A very brilliant little group of paintings
is that contributed to this exhibition by
Lodovico Cavaleri in Sala IX. This artist
has taken many of his subjects here from
Savona : his twilight study—Luci crepus-
colari—is from Savona harbour, his winter

scene—Nivale—with the boats and moored
steamers against the quay snow-covered
makes one shiver, but is supremely clever ;
and one of the best I am able to illustrate
here, these fishing boats with their sails
just set—Tartana delle Pentole—being also
within Savona harbour. I reproduce here
also one panel from Pietro Chiesa's de-
lightful triptych, representing the family
of the artist. S. B.

BOHEMIA.—Oskar Brazda is one of
the most talented and original of
modern Czech painters. Living as he
does always outside his country, chiefly
in Italy, he is comparatively not so well
known here as in foreign artistic circles,
