" MIMI." TEMPERA PAINT-
ING BY VICTOR HAMMER

for the Permanent Gallery of Modern Art
at the Villa Reale. N. G. F.

VIENNA.—A recent display of a col-
lection of works by Victor Hammer
at the Vienna Secession, showed that he
still maintains that high standard which
he already exhibited when he first ap-
peared before the public a decade ago.
The exhibits included pencil and silver
point drawings, tempera paintings, water-
colours, and a series of tempera delinea-
tions done on pergament, some of these
being of peasants in their picturesque
garbs. Victor Hammer is an artist of
great originality, with a certain force and
directness of method, which imparts a
distinct character to his work. He is, at
the same time, highly decorative in his
treatment, which is essentially strong and
convincing. His modelling has a special
interest of its own, while he is always
refined and subtle in his colouring, hand-
ling his brush with great skill. There is
a total absence of any approach to senti-
mentality in his artistic output. It is
sincere, sympathetic, expressive and calls
for appreciation. He is a clever draughts-
man, and at the same time an intelligent
one, suggestive and characteristic. a
The fashion of wearing high combs has

brought about a revival of ivory carving,
for which Vienna and different parts of
Austria were rightly famed in the past.
In the present that work designed and
executed by Karl Hagenauer furnishes
the best example of what can be attained
in this branch of applied art. He has
mastered this difficult technique, and from
the point of view of art has given life
to his carving. The comb here repro-
duced shows both charm and refinement;
it is full of fancy, but restrained and sug-
gestive. Those acquainted with Hagen-
auer's various other achievements in
applied art, carved boxes in ivory, chased
metals, and other objects, find in it that
rhythmic quality and true artistic expression
characteristic of the best of the Vienna
school of modern arts and crafts, which is
above all illuminating for beauty of form,
and beauty of craftsmanship, and beauty
of conception. A. S. L.
