Mr. G. L. Brockhurst's picture, The
Black Silk Dress, which is reproduced as
a colour-plate, is an important example
of the work of an artist who is one of the
most thoughtful of the younger painters
of to-day in his regard for tradition and
in his effort to adapt the lessons of the
past to modern needs. He has not, like
so many of his contemporaries, committed
himself to slavish imitation of some minor
old master and to blind acceptance of
that master's defects as well as his qualities;
he has rather studied a particular school
of painting, and has set to work to inter-
pret the teachings of that school in a way
personal to himself. The great merit of
his work is that though it follows a con-
vention in style, it is intensely serious
in its actual rendering of facts and that it
evades none of the technical difficulties
which must be faced and overcome by
the artist who wishes to be a real master
of his craft. Mr. Brockhurst is an abso-
lutely earnest student with a profound

belief in the virtue of completeness in the
expression of what he sees. 0 0

accomplished artists, and Mr. Lubbock's
prose commentary will treat of the voyages
of the merchant-traders, the circumnavi-
gators and the privateersmen, the swift
runs of the clipper ship era, slavers,
smugglers, and pirates. 000
Mr. John Masefield will write a new
sonnet specially fcr the book, which will
