IT OUSES,” wrote Bacon in his essay “ Of Building,” “are
B i built to live in.” Thus, tersely, he summed up for all time
I the mission of domestic architecture — houses, large and
^ small, are built to live in. The basis of the whole history of
house building, considered in its broadest and most catholic aspect, has
been governed by this truism. Through the ages order has gradually
developed out of chaos, and it has represented man’s tentative efforts to
express in material form his conception of a habitation and a home.
Ancient buildings that remain serve to bring to the imagination reflec-
tions of old conditions and
are evidences of the needs
and conveniences of thedaily
life of other centuries. But,
the obvious purpose of a
house being to provide shel-
ter and comfort inagreement
with the demands of the age
of its erection, it still is built
to live in ; and as the de-
mands of human life, com-
plex and subtle, extend into
spheres far other than cor-
