PREFATORY NOTE
The restrictions, due to the war, which have been placed upon the
building trades in Great Britain have naturally reacted on the archi-
tects, and consequently the amount of material at the disposal of the
Editor for the present volume has been limited. In spite of this, a num-
ber of interesting houses, both new and restored buildings, are shown ;
while the work illustrated in the section dealing with interior decoration
and equipment gives evidence of considerable activity and sound
achievement in this sphere of applied art. It should be mentioned that
the exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Society, held at Burlington House
last winter, was fully dealt with in an important series of articles in The
Studio (November, December, January, and February).
The Editor desires to thank all those who have assisted him in the pre-
paration of this volume by allowing their work to be illustrated. He
* regrets that owing to difficulties arising from the present condition of
transport, etc., it has been impossible to continue the sections on British
Colonial Architecture for the present ; but he hopes to do so in subse-
quent issues of the Year-Book, as soon as circumstances will permit.
