ON THE DESIGNING OF COTTAGES AND SMALL HOUSES

communal services ; and ends with a summary of conclusions and recom-
mendations. In addition to the letterpress, the Report contains illustra-
tions showing the manner of treating the natural peculiarities, lay-out,
and development of sites, together with many drawings concerning the
planning of the cottages recommended. The cottages are divided into
groups or types. Each type has been devised to meet the requirements,
and accord with the method of life, of workers and artisans, while due re-
gard has been paid to locality and aspect. These type plans will be con-
sidered in detail in the later pages of this article.
Now that the provision of dwellings for workers has become a national
question, and the Government is considering measures for finance, super-
vision, suitable bye-laws, and the supply of materials, it may be assumed that
the proposals advanced in the Tudor Walters Report will be carried into
practice. Many of the suggestions contained in it are already being de-
veloped ; and while every at-
tention must be given to the
material aspect and practical
working of the scheme, it is
to be hoped that due regard
will be paid to the fitness and
seemly appearance of the
buildings. No greater calam-
ity could happen to the coun-
try than would be caused by
the erection of an endless
number of characterless
houses built to a standard
pattern. That such a prospect
is beyond the range of possi-
bility is the desire of all who
have the housing question at
heart.
The appearance of the build-
ings in which people live has
an important bearing on their
daily lives. Environment
plays its part in the scheme
of human existence. That
the aesthetic qualities of the
homes of men and women
influence their thoughts and
actions is not only a theory, entrance doorway and dormer window (page 50)
