ON THE DESIGNING OF COTTAGES AND SMALL HOUSES

END OF COTTAGE PARLOUR, WITH FITTED
SHELVES AND CUPBOARDS (PAGE 58)

Gables and projections of good proportion will add distinction. Plain
roofing, flues gathered together in ample chimney-stacks, and an absence
of curved forms and complicated shapes, bring a feeling of breadth and
repose to buildings, and all help to solve constructional problems by eco-
nomic means.
If enrichment be added to brickwork, it should be used sparingly and for
the purpose of emphasizing particular features. Entrance doorways,
gables, stringcourses, and other details of small houses and cottages, give
opportunities for modest decoration. The most satisfactory ornamenta-
tion is obtained by using ordinary bricks and tiles, which, in themselves,
offer all that is needed. On page 28 will be found four examples of simple
surface-decoration which can be made with ordinary bricks. Diaper-
work, as shown by the first example, is only one of the many uses of well-
burnt headers. Projecting courses, formed with ordinary bricks, will effec-
tively emphasize the horizontal lines of a design. They can also be em-
ployed with advantage on chimneys and other parts of buildings. The
details of the actual stacks afford many possibilities for decorative effects
(page 30), and bay-windows (pages 1 and 4), doorways, and porches,
when they are treated with judgment, add greatly to the appearance of
houses. An instance of an entrance doorway, with jambs built of bricks
