ON THE DESIGNING OF COTTAGES AND SMALL HOUSES
building in certain localities—as, for instance, the Eastern Counties of
England where the designs illustrated on page 5 might be applied—and
is quite out of place in others. How, when, and where it should be em-
ployed can only be determined by an appreciation of the legitimate uses
and traditions of plasterwork, and by studying geological traditions. Much
of our modern plasterwork is wanting in discrimination and craftsman-
ship ; it is often covered with stones or products from the seashore, and
stands out conspicuously in unsuitable places. Plaster is, by nature, a sup-
ple material, and it ought to be applied spontaneously by the direct use of
trowel or tool. If it is rightly prepared and laid, much character, as well
as variety and interest, can be given to the surface of walls. Plaster can
also be easily fashioned into shapes and patterns, and, though elaborate
ornamentation or modelling is unsuitable for cottages and small houses,
many simple arrangements for enrichment, quite in keeping with the
scale of small buildings, can be effectively used. Designs of this nature
are shown by the drawings on page 34, and by the gable of the cottage
given on page 35, which is divided into plain panels that slightly pro-
ject from the face of the wall.
Concrete, while capable of be-
ing employed in cottage-build-
ing, differs from the materials
that have been considered in
the preceding pages inasmuch
as its use in this connection be-
longs solely to the present and
the future. As comparatively
few houses have been erected
with concrete, its full possibili-
ties, and its just uses and limita-
tions in relation to domestic
architecture, have yet to be de-
veloped. At the present time,
and in view of the results that
have been secured by its ap-
plication in the direction of
building houses, concrete does
not appear to be a sympathetic
medium for the furtherance of
artistic construction. It lacks
many qualities, such as colour,
texture, and pliability, all of
which are so much to be de-
