to stimulate among the working classes a desire for beautiful and, at the
same time, useful things by supply ing the manufacturers with models which
can be reproduced and sold at a moderate price. To encourage the design-
ing and making of these articles, more especially simple furniture, the So-
ciety and the manufacturers offer prizes to artists and craftsmen.
The exhibition held last autumn was devoted to the furnishing and deco-
rating of the home, and invitations were issued to the leading furniture
makers, decorators, textile manufacturers, potteries, metalworkers, etc.,
to send samples of their work. Several of these are reproduced here. The
dining-room table and chairs by G. B. Gianotti (p. 67) are practical in form
and embellished with carving. The table is a particularly sturdy and well-
proportioned piece of furniture. The stained glass window executed in the
