the grounds of old Putney Park House. An illustration of the pond and
the houses near by, built in red bricks and tiles, appears on page 44.
Turning from the consideration of the general lay-out scheme to the houses
themselves, other points of interest are revealed. To build a large num-
ber of small houses at an economical cost is a proposition abounding in
peculiar conditions, and the work cannot be successfully accomplished
unless those who guide it bring to their task the special qualities required.
Architecture of another kind, such as better-class domestic and commercial
buildings, comes within another sphere ; its limitations are not so tightly
marked, and a different set of opportunities is offered by reason of its scale,
and the need for impressive effect. Although the basic principles of all
good architecture, whether its scale be large or small, remain fixed and
constant—and are demonstrated by the architect in his acceptance of con-
ditions imposed, and his ability to work within such limits—they operate in
different ways. A house, or collection of small houses, for instance, may
