at the west of the Djami il Khidr; see Div. n. a. 4, ill. 210. The difference in size
of letters seems to indicate that these blocks were originally some distance apart, and
the inscription seems to have been a long one, extending across several blocks of the
architrave. The size and general appearance of the letters (except the ornamental A
in frg. a), as well as the proximity of the respective locations, suggest that nos. 563
and 564 and perhaps also no. 572 are fragments of this inscription.

593. Stele. Fragment of a stele found in the northwestern part of the city, a
short distance east of the Djami" il-Khidr. Height 29 cm.; width 36 cm. The top
is rounded. Height of letters 7-21 cm.

Inscr. 593.
Scale 1:20.

’ΕνΘαό'ε'77 κείτε Νεικίας Νεικ^ρατου β(ουλευτ;)ς ?) Β(οσψ/?νών ?), καλώς βιωσας ετ(η) μ,ζ'
Here lies Neikias, (son) of Neikeratos, a senator of Bosra, having lived
nobly 47 years.

Inscr. 594.
Scale 1 : 20.
The form ενΘαό'ετ; is apparently due to a pleonastic combination of similar vowel
sounds, a phonetic phenomenon occasionally occurring in papyri; see Mayser, Gram,
der Griech. Pap., p. 155.
On the abbreviation ββ see no. 284.
595. Sarcophagus. Found outside the West Gate of the city, between the gate
and the round tower. The sarcophagus is said to have been brought to light by an
inhabitant of Bosra, who was afterwards killed in a war with the Druses. Within was
found the skeleton of a woman, adorned with a gold necklace. The head of the
sarcophagus is placed toward the east and is slightly rounded. The cover has been
broken to pieces. Length of sarcophagus (inside) 2.10 m.; width 48 cm.; thickness
of the stone 8-9 cm. The inscription is on the south side, and is inclosed by a frame
formed by incised lines. Length of frame 60 cm.; height 24 cm. Height of letters 5 cm
