601. Lintel. Built into the bridge which carries the road from Bosra to Damascus
across the Wadi Zedi. The block is on the east side of the bridge, near the north-
east corner. Length of 1. i of the inscription 1.88 m., of 1. 2: 1.75 m., of 1. 3: 2.14 m.,
of 1. 4: 1.63 m.

JZy beauty here Gelasios built, as ye may see, that it might also be a deliverance
of his soul from ills, walls and foundations (building), and roofing it well above,
while holy Dositheos ivas Bosra s priest.

The stone is, of course, not in situ, but was brought from some building in the
neighborhood at a time when the bridge was repaired. The character of the building
to which it belonged is not altogether clear. The word κάλλος is used to denote a
building in two other epigrams, Wad. 1914 and C.I.G. 8633 = Kaibel, Ep. Gr. 1062
and 1067, from Bosra and Aphrodisias respectively. In the case of the former the
building is apparently a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in the latter it is described
as a θρεπτηρία. . . οφρζζ σαώσ[τπ άστυ τε καί ν]αετας οτε χείρ,ατος ίσταταί ώρη, an expression
which suggests a granary. The use of λυτ^ριον with κακών suggests such a passage as
Soph. El. 1489 f. : ώς ε’ρ,οΐ το$’ άν κακών μόνον γενοιτο τών πα'λαι λυττίριον, but this refers to
nothing more concrete than the murder and burial of Aigistheus. The expression
λυτόριον κακών may mean either ‘place of release from ills’, i. e. a tomb, or ‘means of
release from guilt’, z. e. a building erected in expiation to free the soul from the suf-
ferings consequent to guilt, some sort of a votive chapel, like that designated by
κάλλος in Wad. 1914. In behalf of the latter explanation it may be argued that the
