Line 2: K A A Y Δ 1 Ο Y , z. τ. λ., Jaussen and Vincent.
Line 4: /////KTI Cθ Η N, z. Jaussen and Vincent.
PP. Jaussen and Vincent read [ε’]κτίσ0ην in 1. 4, but our copy seems to show that
there was no erasure at the beginning of the line. It is indeed possible that € has
been erased or omitted, and that the tomb, as is often the case, is made to speak in
the first person; but we are inclined to retain the reading of the copy and regard
v.-.tTjry as an error for κτισΘευ.
The name Μεγάλη occurs also in an inscription from Gaza, 7?. B. 1 (1892), p. 240,
but it is very rare. On the term σχολαστικός see nos. 560-561.

a manger. Length 1.47 m.; height 33 cm. Height of letters 5-8 cm. Copied

The question concerning the character of the building to which this lintel belonged
is difficult and interesting. The word μεμόριου is regularly used with the meaning of
‘tomb’; see no. 575. However, this cannot be its meaning here. The 'two saints’
names must, in spite of their case-endings, be regarded as appositives to the words
τοΐς α'γιοις Μαρτυρσι, and the traditional tomb of SS. Sergius and Bacchus was not at
