At the end of line 1 Waddington restored [in aede] Iovis. In our copy the last
letter visible in this line is clearly F and the accuracy of the reading is attested by
Ewing’s Γ.
In the lost part of the inscription mention was evidently made of two former
commanders of Iulius Maximus. We may perhaps surmise that they had commissioned
the construction of the edifice to which this lintel belonged, and, supposing the loss
of a letter at the end of 1. 1, we may restore ffaciendum) \c(uraverunt)\.
A C. Iulius Maximus, soldier in the 3d Cyrenaic Legion, who dedicated an altar
to Ζευς [Φρα]τρίος καί "Ηρα θεοί πατρώοι at Bosra (Wad. 1922), is perhaps to be identified
with the builder of this monument. It has been suggested by M. Clermont-Ganneau
(7?. A. O. 1 (1888), p. 110) that this soldier was also the donor of several votive
offerings made by C. Iulius Maximus to Juno Regina at the sanctuary of Baal Marcod
at Dhr il-Kalcah near Beirht; see C. I. L. in 6675, 6676=12096, and 14391. How-
ever, this sanctuary is too far from the Hauran, and the name Iulius Maximus is too
common, to assume such an identification. A Iulius Maximus, soldier apparently in
the .3d Gallic Legion, set up a dedication to Ζευς πατρώος θεο'ς at Msekeh in the Ledja
(see no. 795), and a M. Iulius M. f. Sabatina Maximus from Mantua was a centurion in
the 3d Cyrenaic Legion; see no. 526.
659. Lintel. 155 a. d. Found in the ruins of the temple situated south of the
village; see Div. II. a. 5, Ills. 294-296 and Pl. xx. The stone has been recently
broken into two pieces. Length of frg. a i.io m., of frg. b 1.14 m.; height 23 cm.
The inscription is within a dovetailed frame. Height of letters 4—4x/2 cm.
