combines the letters at the left of B into one character, rather resembling a broken M.
Inscriptions of the second century have been found in this neighborhood (see no. 700),
and it is possible that μβ' (147 a. d.) should be read here. On the other hand, it is
hard to read M in our copy. Perhaps ριβ' (217 a. d.) is the correct restoration.
The name in 1. 1 is probably to be regarded as a combination of the common
name Zaid (ΖαΗος) with Kaum which appears in the name of the Nabataean deity
Shah al-Kaum; see Littmann, J. A. xvm (1901), p. 381 f. and Clermont-Ganneau,
A. A. O. iv (1901), p. 382 f. If this be so, the name would be analogous to Ζε<?αλας
(Zaid-allah) which is found in no. 463. The tribe of the Kov^vot does not seem to
be mentioned elsewhere. It is perhaps the ancient Arabic tribe Kanan.
