Division III Section A Part 5

In the centre of the face is a disk with enclosed cross. Diameter of the disk 32 cm.
Height of letters 4-5 cm. Copied by Butler.
Dussaud and Macler, JZ. S. J/, p. 257, no. 48.

Inscr. 722. Scale I : 20.

O God of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, bless the monastery ...........
Line i: Id ©/////////////////, D. and M.
Line 3: disk BOTON/////, D. and M.
Line 4: Γ5ΚΙ(Α// «AT /LUN, D. and M.
We are unable to read the last half of the third line and the last line of this
inscription. MM. Dussaud and Macler combine the letters in the last two lines at the
right of the disk and suggest βοτο>ων as a certain reading. Against this supposition
is to be urged the fact that lines 1 and 2 are to be read across the whole length
of the face; hence we may assume that the letters βατόν are to be combined with the
letters in line 3 at the left of the disk. Our copy, furthermore, shows evidence of
additional letters in 1. 3, the first of which is apparently one of the cursive alphas
used elsewhere in the inscription.
723. Lintel. Over a door in the west wall of the arched room, which is on
the north side of the monastery, and which probably served as the chapel. The door
leads from this room into a tower which is of older construction than the monastery,
and which was included in the monastery when the latter was built; see Div. II. a. 5,
Ill. 303. The lintel is evidently in' situ. The upper left corner has been broken off.
Length 1.25 m.; height 27 cm. The inscription is on a raised dovetailed plate. Three
crosses have been roughly chiseled on the face, obliterating some of the letters. Height
of letters 4-5 cm. Copied by Butler.

Inscr. 723. Scale I : 20.

. . echos, (son) of Abd-Baal, constructed the door at his own expense.
The name Αβ^ίβαλος does not seem to occur elsewhere in Greek letters ; it is analogous
to such names as Αβίαλγας (Abd-al-Ga} no. 56, Αβίαλας (Abd-Allah} no. 46, and
Αβό'αό'ουσοφας (Abd-Dushara} Clermont-Ganneau, R. A. O. iv (1901), p. 168, in all of
which the word 'abd = ‘servant’ is combined with the name of the god.
