The formula εξ έπψ,ελίας has presumably about the same meaning as the more
usual expression εκ πρόνοιας, on which see no. 546. It is found also in Wad. 2477,
and as έπψ,ελία in Wad. 245722 = our no. 793s- On the name Ναζάλας see no. 5951.
Μογεαιρος is usually spelled Μοαιερος; see no. 347. Αττος is perhaps a rendering of the
Latin name Attus or Attics, or, on the other hand, it may represent the Arabic Hatt.
735. Block. Built into the wall of the conduit southeast of the ruined town,
which is south of the modern village; see Div. II. a. 5, Ill. 304. The stone faces
west. The right half has been broken off. Length of extant portion 1.10 m.; height
48 cm. The inscription is within a dovetailed frame. Height of letters 3—4 cm.

Any restoration of this inscription must be tentative as to details; the general
drift of the epitaph seems, however, fairly discernible. As in Wad. 2177, a tomb
begun by a father and left unfinished at his death, was completed σπουδή of the son,
or, as the space would seem to indicate, of some other relative and the son. The
name of the father is evidently to be restored in 1. 1.
In 1. 4, notwithstanding the metrical license ανεστ-η, it seems necessary to make
άνέστ-η τόο'ε σψ.α the beginning of the hexameter; the clausula -«σ- τόδε σήμ.χ is almost
invariably found in this place in the verse; see Kaibel, Eft. Gr. 146, 158, 182, 188,
214, 219, 256, 294, 367.
In 1. 5 we have restored εκ κάματων στρατιάς on the analogy of no. 603, where the
phrase occurs; similar references to military service are frequent; see C. I. G. 4582;
Wetzstein 3622 =c Wad. 225322; Wad. 2419.
