Division III Section B Part 2

The whole space before this A is blank on the stone, and, on the opposite side of
the square, all the corresponding space was originally blank, except a spot close to
the square, sufficient for a single letter or a cross, which is now mutilated. In the
first line, after the M, follow ω-GO, or, more probably, 0 — G, and then Ο, Θ or (JU.
In the second line the space before TOY was blank originally.
1004. The same building. Three voussoirs of an arch, now lying in the ruins
of the building where No. 1003 was found. They are 35 cm. high, and, at the bottom,
35, 40 and 26 cm. broad respectively. The mouldings, from the top downwards, consist
of a plain fascia, 9 cm. broad, an ovolo, and three more plain fasciae, of which the
first is 8 cm. broad, the second 8T/2 and the lowest about 5 cm. The inscription is on
the next to the lowest of these, incised, in letters 41/3 to 6 cm. high. Copied by Dr.
Littmann.
Voussoir a. Voussoir b. Voussoir c.
YTTGPA BNIO ΚΥΡΙΑΚΟ
Probably the inscription was somewhat as follows:
'Ύπερ (α)[νανεωσεως Λί]β(α)νώ[υ καί] Κυριακο[ΰ.
For the regeneration of Libanios and Kyriakos.
Compare Nos. 1009, 1010, 1013, etc. Instead of ανανεωσεως, αναπαύσεως or λούσεως
might be restored.
1005. FDjAZ. Church of the Apostles: Chancel post, 429-30 a.d. On a
post for a chancel rail or balustrade, found in situ, in front of the south pier of the
chancel arch of a large church, now completely ruined, about five
minutes’ walk north of the modern village. See Div. II, b, p. 84 ff.
The face of the post is elaborately carved : a drawing of it is shown
on p. 85 of Div. II. Another side bears the inscription. This side
is 3Οτ/2 cm. broad. The letters, 5T/2 to 6]/3 cm. high, are in relief,
and are executed in bands, 9, 11 and 9 cm. wide respectively. Drawn
by Dr. Littmann.
νΕτ(ους) αρ.ψζ, επί Σαλερ,ου, π^ε(σβυτερου).
In {the') year 741, tinder Salernos, presbyter.
To the same church belong the eight inscriptions which follow, Nos. 1006—1013.
They were carved upon the voussoirs of the chancel arch and of the arches of the
nave arcades. See Div. II, b, p. 85. These voussoirs now lie in almost hopeless
confusion among the ruins of fallen walls and piers. Eighty-two inscribed voussoirs,
or fragments of voussoirs, were found: of these, eight contain only a cross or a chris-
mon; but seventy-four contain from one to eleven letters each. They were copied,
some by Mr. Butler, some by Dr. Littmann, and the rest by the editor. The voussoirs
themselves vary from 37 to 84 cm. in breadth at the bottom, and from 35 to 46 cm.
in height. The average block, however, is about 50 cm. in breadth at the bottom and
from 40 to 45 cm. in height. They are 63 cm. thick. One, containing only a chris-
