side of the house is a broad passage, closed by a doorway at its north end which
forms part of the north wall of the house. Apparently the courtyard, at the south
side of the house, was entered through this passage from the street at the north: see
plan in Div. II, b, 3, p. 137. The inscription is incised on the fascia next to the
lowest of the mouldings. This fascia is 1.43 m. long and 5^ cm. wide. The letters
are 4 cm. high: they are well formed, well aligned and well cut: □, for example, is
almost perfectly square. The reading is certain.

This inscription reflects the well-known passage, Matthew 1, 2^f: Τοΰτο <ίέ ολου γέ-
γουεν ίνα πληρωθώ το ρηθ'εν υπό Κυρίου θίά του προφήτου λεγοντος’ ’ΐάοΰ η Τίαρθ ενός εν γαστρί
εξει, καί τεξεται υιόν, και καλέσουσιν το όνομα αυτού Εμμανουήλ’ ο έστιν μεθερμη-
νευόμενου Με θ’ ημών ό Θεός. Compare also such passages in the Psalms as, for example,
xvn, 3: Ο Θεός μου βοηθός μου, καί ελπιώ επ’ αυτόν, LXI, g, or cxlv, 5. Also the passage
in Romans, vm, 31, which is frequent ori Syrian lintels: Ει ο' Θεός ύπερ ημών, τις καθ' ημών.

and 223, belong. The mouldings of the present fragments show that the lintel belonged
to a gate-way in the south wall of the courtyard.1 The height of the lintel was 57 cm.,
of the inscribed band, which is about the center of the face, 5 cm. The inscription
on the first fragment is 1.10m., that on the second 81 cm. in length. Copied by
Dr. Littmann.
