Eine schöne Satyre ist Ramsay's „Mercury in Quest of Peace". Mercur,
von Jupiter ausgeschickt, den Frieden zu suchen, geht zuerst zum Hofe:
But soon alake! he was beguil'd;
And fand that courtiers only smil'd,
And with a formal flatt'ry treat ye,
That they mair sickerly might eheat ye.
Peace was na there, nor e'er could dwell,
Where hidden envy makes a hell.
Dann geht er vor Gericht:
But sure he thought lo find the wench
Among the fowk that ßll the bench,
Sae muckle gravity and grace
Appear'd in ilka judge's face:
Eren here he was deceiv'd again,
For ilka judge stuck Io his ain
Interpretation of the law,
And verfd themsells with hang and draw.
Hierauf wendet er sich zur Kirche:
where neuer three
In ev'ry point cou'd e'er agree:
Dann denkt er, den Frieden in der Universität zu finden:
Science is ane, these men agree.
Doch hat er sich auch da geirrt:
For here contention and ill-nature
Had runkled ilka learn'd feature.
Dann sucht er den Frieden in der Familie, aber vergebens. So kehrt
er zu Jupiter zurück. Auf dem Rückwege sieht er ihn unter einer Weide
sitzen. Er wohnt bei einem Einsiedler in der Wildnis. Mercur redet ihn
an und sagt:

That one mag long your presence crave
And miss ye still; but this seems plain,
To have ye, ane man be alone.
Prior's Fabeln sind witzige, frische Satyren; ebenso versteht es Smart,
die Satyre zu handhaben. Man vgl. z. B.

Ye thunders roll, ye oceans roar,
And wake the rough resounding shore;
Ye guns in smoke and flames engage,
And take the remparts with your rage;
